For those who love the game of pickleball, it can be frustrating to have to book ahead at the local pickleball courts or pay fees to access commercial courts. Installing your own backyard pickleball court is a great solution, and if your yard has the space, it is relatively easy to build a court and add some accessories to create your ideal pickle paradise. Here are some tips that can help you start planning your design.

 

Choose the Court Size 

An official-sized court is the best option if you have the space. According to USA Pickleball, pickleball court dimensions for official play are 44 feet by 20 feet, and when you add in the buffer for the out-of-bounds zone, the total size is 64 by 34 feet. If your space is a bit limited, you can keep the playable area the same but shrink the out-of-bounds zone down to 60 by 30 feet.

If you have a small backyard, you may have to settle for a court that is smaller than the official size. By shrinking the dimensions down proportionately, you can create a playable and enjoyable court at a size equal to 90% or 80% of the official court. For instance, a court scaled to 80% would have a 35 by 16-foot playable area.

Install a Base

Most pickleball courts are built on a base of concrete or asphalt. This will require removing the sod in the area where the court will be installed, adding a layer of road base or sand and gravel or to create a strong, level sub-surface, and finally, adding the top layer of concrete or asphalt. Concrete is extremely durable, but it is hard and dense, reducing ball bounce. Asphalt is softer and more flexible, but it can be damaged more easily.

Select The Play Surface

Many backyard pickleball courts feature an acrylic play surface that is essentially painted over concrete or asphalt. While this works well and can improve play characteristics, it is a thin layer that offers very little protection against injuries, and it must be reapplied often to maintain a quality surface. For the ultimate in playability, consider an advanced cushioned surface. It offers significantly better gameplay performance while helping to reduce joint stress and minimize injuries.

Add Lighting for Evening Games

Your Guide to Owning a Pickleball Court: Maintenance & More

For those who love the game of pickleball, having your own custom pickleball court built is the ultimate way to enjoy the game with friends and family without taking too much time out of the day or having to share the court with other groups. This guide will discuss how to design, set up, and maintain your backyard pickleball court so that it will give you the most enjoyment possible.

Designing Your Custom Court 

The most important part of building a backyard pickleball court is choosing its size. Not every home has the room to install a full-size, regulation court, but selecting a size that is playable while making the most use of the available space is a worthy goal.

If you can swing it, putting in a full-sized court is ideal. According to the USA Pickleball, the official size for a pickleball court is 44 feet by 20 feet for the playable area, with a total of 64 by 34 feet when the out-of-bounds area is included.

When a smaller court is needed, the best place to skimp is the out-of-bounds area. By reducing its size to 60 by 30 feet, you can maintain the playability of an official-sized court while squeezing it into a smaller total area.

If that still isn’t small enough, the dimensions can be scaled down proportionally to achieve an enjoyable court that is near to the official size. For example, a court-sized at 90% would have a playable area of about 39 ½ feet by 18 feet, or about 54 by 27 feet with the out-of-bounds area.

To finish off the court, consider adding lighting to play after dark, and a high-performance cushioned surface to reduce joint stress and injuries.

Court Construction

The land where the court will be built will need to be cleared of brush and debris. Then, the court installers will come in to build a suitable base of stone and gravel topped by asphalt or concrete, finishing it off with the play surface of your choice, whether that is an acyclic coating or a cushioned surface.

Lines will be painted along the perimeter of the playable area, as well as at the appropriate locations to designate the non-volley zones or kitchens and the left and right serving areas on each size. The net and all accessories will then be installed.

Court Maintenance

To keep your custom pickleball court looking great and playing like new, all that is needed is the occasional sweeping and spray-down with a hose. Once the play surface starts to show signs of wear, it should be recoated if it is acrylic or repaired if it is a cushioned surface, and the lines should be repainted as they become stained or faded. Finally, the net should be tightened or replaced as needed.

Pickleball is quickly becoming one of the most popular and fastest-growing sports in America. Curious about pickleball? Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. What’s Pickleball?

Pickleball originated in the mid-1960s on Bainbridge Island, Washington, as the invention of three dads aiming to entertain their children during the summer. Over the decades, it has evolved from a backyard pastime to an international sensation, boasting tournaments, leagues, and clubs around the world.

 

The sport is played on a court similar in size to a doubles badminton court, but with a net lower than a tennis net. Players hold solid paddles that are larger than ping pong paddles but smaller than tennis rackets to volley a perforated ball back and forth.

Basics of Playing Pickleball

The Court

A pickleball court measures 20 x 44 feet, divided into several zones. These include the service areas and a 7-foot non-volley zone (named the “kitchen”) close to the net.

Scoring

Pickleball can be played either as singles or doubles. A game is typically played up to 11 points. However, you must win by 2 points. Only the serving player or side can score points.

Serving

A serve must be made underhand, hitting the ball below the waist, and it must be served diagonally, landing in the opposite service court. The server starts from the right-hand court and switches sides with their partner (in doubles) after every point scored. If the serving team loses a point, the opposing side gains the serve.

The Kitchen

The ‘kitchen’ is a non-volley zone and a crucial element in pickleball strategy. Players cannot volley (hit the ball without letting it bounce first) if they’re standing in this zone. This ensures a more strategic game, as players cannot simply smash the ball from right at the net.

Double Bounce Rule

When the ball is served, the receiving side must let it bounce before returning, and similarly, the serving team must also let it bounce once before volleying. This means two bounces are required after the serve, one on each side.

Faults

A fault can be the result of several actions, such as failing to serve the ball into the correct service box, volleying in the kitchen, or hitting the ball out of bounds. Once a fault is made, service is either passed to the serving team’s partner or to the opposing team.

Game Flow

A game of pickleball begins with the right-hand side server. Play continues, with sides volleying back and forth, until a fault is made. Points can only be scored by the serving side. When the serving side’s score is even, the player on the right serves, and when it’s odd, the player on the left serves.

While tennis is a more familiar and widely-known game, with international championships, well-known athletes, and worldwide participation, its ‘sister sport’, pickleball, is quickly growing in popularity. While it may sound whimsical, pickleball is fast-growing and has its own unique appeal.

Court Size and Design

A standard tennis court is about 78 feet in length and 27 feet wide for singles matches, extending to 36 feet wide for doubles. The net is placed at a height of 3.5 feet at the post and 3 feet in the center. Tennis courts can be made of grass, clay, or other hard surfaces, each surface impacting the tennis ball’s speed and bounce.

A pickleball court is smaller than a tennis court, about the size of a badminton court. A pickleball court measures 44 feet in length and 20 feet in width. The net’s height is 34 inches at the center. Pickleball courts can be many different surface types, including acrylic, concrete, and specialty rubber/plastic courts, providing a hard, even surface.

Equipment

When playing tennis, players use a tennis racquet, which is strung and can be up to 29 inches long. The tennis ball is made of felt-covered rubber, pressurized to bounce effectively on the court. In contrast, pickleball uses a solid paddle, often made of wood, composite, or graphite, and it’s smaller than a tennis racquet. The ball is similar to a wiffle ball, with holes that affect its bounce and movement.

Scoring

Tennis uses a unique scoring system, with points awarded in sequences of 15, 30, and 40 before reaching a game. A match is typically played in best-of-three or best-of-five sets, with each set requiring a player to win at least 6 games with a margin of 2 games. Pickleball utilizes a straightforward point system. The first team or player to reach 11 points with a lead of at least 2 points wins the game. Matches are often played best out of three games.

Serving

When playing tennis, the person serving stands behind the baseline, serving diagonally into the opponent’s service box. Players get two serves to start a point. If both serves fail, it’s a double fault, and the opposing player wins the point. In pickleball, serving is exclusively underhand, and it must clear the no-volley zone, landing in the diagonal service box. Players get only one serve attempt, and double faults don’t exist.

Gameplay Dynamics

Tennis is known for its powerful serves, volleys, and groundstrokes. Players often use spin, slice, and topspin to maneuver their opponents and win points. Due to the smaller court and wiffle ball, pickleball focuses on strategy over power. The no-volley zone (or “kitchen”) prohibits players from smashing the ball while inside this area, emphasizing placement and strategy
